I tried to format a CompactFlash card of 16GB or more on the Canon 5D, but it could only detect CF cards of 8GB or less.

The firmware of the old Canon 5D Digital Camera does not support memory cards over 8GB. Please download and update to the latest firmware of your Canon 5D at the following link: http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eos5d/eos5d_firmware-e.html
